It is great that this event is taking place and there are a number of ‘Draw-a-Thons’ around nowadays. The original (still going strong) was conceived of at Pratt in 1988 by late artist Al Blaustein. It would be nice to acknowledge his contribution.

I had to chuckle seeing your studio photographs! While I work in watercolor instead of oil, I too, use the end of a brush to poke thru the tube with the dried top…..fortunately, I have enough old brushes that if one snaps off it’s no big loss….Thought I’d mention that I developed the habit of completely straightening up my workspace BEFORE starting a new work. Mentally, I can clear the ‘cobwebs’ away from my last piece and get a fresh start. Considering any unfinished paintings have the major portions completed, I don’t have to worry about creating the exact colors I used later on. That being said, my studio does look like a tornado went thru it while I’m in the middle of a painting. Seems completely strange to be tuned into one’s muse AND focused on housekeeping, so most artists probably have the same look in their studios!

Daniel, in all honesty I think you take yourself far too seriously and you keep on telling all on here about how you started drawing when you were 5…… and how long you have been painting…..and letting people know that they are not good. It’s like you feel you have to prove something. You don’t seem to have much confidence in yourself.
Yes, everyone finds their own technique in the end….or keeps on working and perfecting the one they have already, but it is good to find inspiration and ideas, weather they come from an accurate source or not. Thanks to the fact that Derek has posted some of these so called Odd techniques on the internet (whether they be completely accurate or not), have certainly inspired me (and there is nothing wrong with inspiration) and I am happy he posted these as I doubt I would, or ever will, have the chance to see Nedrum at work personally…..

Derek,

You would not have any trouble drawing and painting and copying other persons’ works if you REALLY knew how to draw and paint. You say “draftsmen” that criticize you have no texture. Well, have you ever come to the idea that they might not have texture because texture is not a part of their aesthetic goals?

You write and stress so much about techniques, yet you have nothing to show for it, value-wise, proportionally-wise and color-wise( I’m including your youtube videos and website work) with all honesty.

I don’t want to put up a link to my website and show my work to you because I’m not you, I don’t live in the “let’s see who’s better” world in which you live. I’m so happy with my works and what I have achieve with them. Been able to travel all over, some of my works are in major museum permanent collections, I’ve met some pretty interesting people throughout my journey… and for a twenty four year old, I know I’m doing something right. So, I don’t really need to show you anything.

You know, in the old days, young art students learned anatomy and drawing YEARS before they even grabbed a brush to start painting. It is the way I was raised and I really recommend you do that. It is never to late.

Dear Rembrandt fellow,

From paisano to paisano,

I don’t really need to learn “Nerdrum techniques” because these technique you are referring to have been around for centuries and I was lucky to have discovered them ON MY OWN in my teens way before I even learned what they really were and called, way before I even knew who Nerdrum was. Nerdrum has just been using these technique in unique ways to satisfy his own aristic needs. That’s why his paintings are unique. He did not try to copy someone else or SELL things that are already free to the everyone who wishes to learn painting. Unlike this derek, all the knowledge that I have acquired from painting since I was five years old has been available to anyone who has been interested for the taking without having to pay one single penny. They do have to pay, however, with years of hardwork, sweat, trial and error and frustrations, just like I have been doing for the past nineteen years and will keep doing for the rest of my life.

Even if he apologizes about the comments he’s made about Nerdrum’s students, there is still nothing humble about making money off of someone who has earned it all through his OWN hardwork like Odd has. Plain and Simple.

You clearly don’t know anything about painting. So let me leave you with something, great painting and wisdom is not acquired through reading or looking at others paint but from YOU painting, FAILING and painting again and again. LEAVE THE BOOKS AND TUTORIALS ALONE AND FOCUS ON YOUR CANVASES as no amount of text and video will make you a better painter. Only YOU can make yourself a better painter.

Yes…that is why..I prepared my own stand polimerized oil…as medium…until now it is working well…many are very skeptical about new mediums…The titles you show me are very interesting I will look for more information about…I will liked to added a post about techniques and mediums…taked from the Book The oil painters Bible…it presents explanations about Flemish …Venetian and direct painting…wroted by Virgill Elliot.

Hi Stephanie, I just stumbled upon this post tonight. These comments are more than strange and I’m shocked to see that Rembrandt has come back. I would like to tell you having actually studied with Odd, that Derek’s techniques are not very accurate i’m sorry to say. One major reason being that Odd doesn’t really have a technique, he employs everything he can use. This includes impasto, glazing, sanding, scumbling, rag wipeouts, fingers, w/e. He changes it all the time, he just searches for the end result he is looking for. It’s total freedom he enjoys, he does not find comfort in restraints such as techniques. Also, I’ve never seen him use a razor blade, but perhaps he did at a time in the past.

If you work in such a fly by the seat of your pants way of making decisions as the painting evolves and resisting anything that speaks of style, you’ll soon find that you’ll have a hard time getting your work to not look like Odds. That’s mostly because so few painters actually work this way, and yet its often most criticized as being unoriginal or Odd-like when employed. The differences between late Titian, late Rembrandt, and late Nerdrum are vast. To most outside of that smaller area they all probably appear very similar or the same. The same as many schools probably think their students all paint different where as outsiders think they all paint exactly the same.

Derek is correct in that Odd doesn’t like to discuss techniques. Why talk about the tools? The tools only help to shape the spirit of the painting, not become it. Means to an end, not the end. The whole idea is trying to get beyond a portrait or just another painting, and there you’ll build up a sort of history as Odd calls it in your work. And yes, that will often include those little intricacies that people will inevitably spend hours looking at wondering how it was done. The truth being Odd probably wouldn’t know either, or care for that matter.

Hi Rembrandt, This weekend I visited the Ravenswood Atelier in Chicago, and Matthew Almy did mention Maroger to me. He had an amazing amount of expertise regarding mediums. He recommended that I read a few books about materials: “The Materials and Techniques of Painting” by Kurt Wehlte, “The Mastery of Oil Painting” by Taubes and “Painting Materials A Short Encyclopedia” by Rutherford J. Gettens. After speaking to him I am more skeptical about how the main paint companies market their products. He recommended sticking with products that have been used for ages opposed to newer materials.

The polimeryzed oil…is very resistant and dries quickly…you can prepared it by yourself…my Teacher used it…and his paintings (despite the centuries) until now looks as if they were recently painted.
polimerized oil…chalk and ground glass…was aparently his medium…acording to the test…easy to prepared….and good for everlasting paintings.

I am paying more attention to surface quality lately; however, I am only just starting to compare the results of different varnishes. It’s important to follow the advise of experts, but the only way to truly understand the differences is to test out various products oneself.

Controlling Surface Quality: A Holistic Approach

Glazing and Varnishing
The final stages of the painting can ultimately determine the type of surface quality the painting will take.Whereas some painters prefer a dead-matte finish, others like the saturated colors and depth obtained by a high gloss. With an understanding of materials, painters can easily achieve their desired surface quality. First, it is important to make a distinction between a glaze and a varnish. A glaze is a permanent paint layer
containing little to no pigment; paintings may contain multiple layers of glazes or none at all. The popular technique of finishing off a painting with a clear layer of Galkyd, for example, constitutes a glaze layer and fulfills the artist’s aesthetic concern for surface quality. A varnish layer, on the other hand, is a non-porous, protective layer that is removable for conservation purposes; it serves its aesthetic purpose while also providing protection against dust and dirt. There is much benefit in applying both a thin glaze layer and a varnish layer to a finished oil painting. When a varnish is applied, it will often “sink-in” to the matte (absorbent) areas while appearing glossy over the already glossy (nonabsorbent) areas. The varnish will then dry with an uneven surface. Consider using the “oiling out”
method (described above). This will even out the surface and, more importantly, even out the absorbency rates on the surface of the painting. The final varnish layer will lie on top of the glaze layer, rather than sink in to the permanent layers of paint.

When you make the underpainting…and Is not totally dry yet…or is Mordente…and then you added a glaze…direct over the painting with out any brush…wait fo a litle while…and then move the glaze with a dry brush…The glaze will move the underpainting…(they will not mix)…and will appear very interestings textures in the underpainting.

Stephanie I dont like to use Dammar in nothing at all… glazing os scumble. But I have heard that at the end of a painting is recomendable to put a thin layer of It….when the paint is completely dried.
Is this really necesary? please help me in this because I finished a painting one month ago…and I woudl like to know what is better.

Im totally agre about the use of Stand oil…paintings looks great, with tridimensional…and by this medium we can create chiaroscuro…I used to prepare the linseed oil by myself…and for added body I mix a little chalk or Calcium carbonate into it and ground as a dryer, in that manner I can continue working adding layers….wet over wet…without lost the transparency of the color…and saving time.

Well let me tell you that you are marvelous in many aspects.
you have a great formation in painting and in other things..your work is great despite your age…But people having the potential to become a great painters by his insight through his deep observation., But that can not adquire the necesary formation, with great painters or in famous schools. A little piece of Nerdrum painting is enough. So that explains the obsesion of many on his work…and not only the amateurs painters but even very profesionals.

I certainly admire Odd Nerdrums’ paintings, but I am not striving to paint like him. My goal in painting has always been to take the realism and freedom of Sargent’s style, and incorporate narrative and metaphor in a subtle, personal manner. Over the years, Sargent has become less of an influence. Currently, I am exploring painting on my own, and trying new techniques that interest me.

Let me tell you why.
If we want to reach the glory in our work of painting. We must keep open our mind in order to adquire knowledge.
The true is…that we can learn from anyone who has at least something to share with us. He or She dont need to be a master in drawing, in perspective in painting etc…In order to have something very interesting to share…that can help us.
Its TRUE that Derek is not a master in drawing…You and Daniel probably are drawing better than many painters together.

But How can happen that you with all your knowledge and practice had not become to know the tricks of nerdrum in painting?..or any old master? One thing is clear…despite YOU have very good drawing and use of color palette…YOU will not be able to incorporate the method of painting of Nerdrum… in your paintings…..WITHOUT the help that he is offering to all of us. And this is a TRUE….But is you are humble and have a lowlines attitude you will recognize how true is this…..Even you denied this….You already had reveiced Derek´`s HELP. or not?

Hi Julia, Thanks for your insightful comment! It’s amazing the variety of different skills that artists can have. Personally, I have almost no ability to draw from my imagination, and yet I can draw from life decently. I have a lot of admiration for people who can draw characters or cartoons without a reference. I find that I am my own worse enemy lately in terms of limiting myself…which goes beyond just art. It’s also unfortunate that people get pigeonholed into one profession/specialty. I fear that someone can be led in one direction, and then face difficulties trying to return to the previous career path. I think it’s just my own fear that’s limiting me. Often, I too feel pulled in too many directions….but then I realize that there are so many people out there that accomplish so much. So, I guess I need to toughen up!

This is an interesting topic and a great way to frame it. I work as an illustrator at a gaming company and have worked in animation too. These jobs have required working from imagination. I have been in awe of some of my fellow coworkers and other artists in these industry who have fantastic imaginary skill that I wish I had. I admire them all.
It makes me want to create imaginary things – narrative work that is stylized and such. I find it pretty challenging. At the same time, I still love observational painting, of course.

I wish artists didn’t have to choose a discipline. Maybe sometimes I want to work on making a comic book, maybe sometimes I want to focus on making paper flower sculptures, maybe sometimes I want to paint. Isn’t it all the same? Why do galleries insist on defining us?

Vincent Desiderio is an amazing painter, and just has a nice personality as well. As a teacher he brings your attention to subtleties that are easy for someone to miss. I remember him suggesting that I add color variations into the shadows, and it’s something that I always try to keep in mind.

I really enjoyed getting to know Jacob Collins’ personality, in a way, from this panel discussion. Though I admire Alexey’s passion and agree with his perspective, ultimately, I see the wisdom in Collins’ direction. James Panero’s insights were helpful as well – if fundamental change will be made it’ll come largely from the collectors, not the critics.

My painting style changes depending on the artwork I am looking at a lot at the time. Sometimes I think more about the colors, textures, and luminosity; however, those paintings don’t turn out as realistic looking. At other times, I am so taken by Jeremy Lipking’s subtle colors that I try to emulate his work.

I think that Juan Jr Ramirez’s insightful comment on Facebook will influence my process going forward.
“I see that a lot of the paintings that i adore dont have many value changes and but there is definitely a contrast. Sargent said subtlety can be overstated. Stand back to correct the value you put for it may be too drastic. Perhaps as a rule of thumb no need to put it the subtlety that you see. Tips to control subtlety, Mass in the head without including these things, eyes, eye brows, nostrils, lips, any reds, any highlights, and any shadows (but include the major shadow plane).”

It’s kind of a shame that adding more detail detracts from the realism. It takes a lot of discipline to master Ramirez’s suggestions. I also wonder what balance of style is right for me. I love subtle, realistic paintings so much, and yet I find myself driven to add highly saturated color. I haven’t quite rectified this yet.

I just put up some tutorials on youtube. they are short. Also, I will be posting drawing tutorials maybe on youtube. I think people are confused. They think because I spent all my time figuring out the texture that I can’t draw. The truth is, I can draw, it is just hard as hell to do Nerdrum texture and draw right at the same time in many layers. Most of the great “draftmen” that criticize me have crappy texture or no texture interest at all other than some tiled brushstrokes. Here is my youtube link.

also, unless you have read my blog, the videos I put on the net such as the one above, are WAY out of date. That was like the beginning of my research when I knew almost nothing, but the videos are there now. They bring people to the site, so I will not take them off. But people who judge what I have to say based on the video above are mistaken.

Hi Daniel, in defense of me, LOL. I have improved my drawing somewhat. I don’t have models so my drawing is not as good as someone who has models. But the texture techniques are what I was after. If you want to judge your paintings against mine, go to http://painterderek.com. and compare yours to mine. just post your website so I can see your work if I am a “hack”. Judge my work by the textures I say I can produce. If you have read any of my research, you would know that much of it was texture, not drawing. Also, the pages are free, the videos are free, the blog is free, the only things that are not free are the books and the publisher sets minimum prices for those and I make like no money. I did not do it for the money anyway. I came across your criticism of me, and decided to defend myself since you posted everything after I made it all free and still have a problem with me. I have taken the criticisms of former nerdrum students off the site except for the already published books. Now it is time Daniel for you to post your site and lets see what you have to back yourself up instead of bashing me on the internet anonymously.

I hope I didn’t come across as snarky! I think abstraction is much stronger after academic training, so I usually enjoy seeing this sort of mix. I was just surprised that show was so different than the ACOPAL exhibition. I liked all the works in the NYAA show, but I would have expected to see more alumni with new, amazing realist work. I wonder if Dan Thompson or Patricia Watwood submitted anything. The paintings in the slide show were some of my favorites.

Hmm, did the show inspire you to go down a similar figurative-modern path? I love the idea of combining figurative ideals with aspects of modernism, but I’m a little suspect the trend represented. Guess I’d have to see more NYAA shows in the future.

For the past year and a half I have been able to paint for a few hours in the evening and over the weekend, but it is hard to keep this up all the time. I am going to try to make more time for my art in the future. I’m not sure how, yet, but I am going to keep up my painting and see what happens. The benefit of working full time, though, is that I can afford art supplies and I don’t have to worry about selling my paintings!

I can relate to your experience of the previous five years right now. I’ve only completed one painting this year (though I’m almost done with two I’ve been working on for over a month), and I just know I’m not doing enough. Do you foresee yourself making even more time in the future for your art?

I can identify with Sadie’s comment in a way. In 2005 I decided to stop painting. It seemed like not painting would simplify my life. I had a child to raise, I was busy with my job, and I had other priorities. In addition I didn’t feel that having a gallery representation brought anything to my life. I just felt that painting took too much time away from everything else. I thought it made more sense to put my energy into my job. I didn’t start painting again until 2010. At that point, I realized that it wasn’t too hard to make time for it. The only problem is that it takes A LOT of time if you want to be a serious painter. When I see the achievements other artists are making it drives me to paint. I would feel utterly left behind if I didn’t start painting again. I know I would regret it later in life.
